Faculty members at Elon University are working toward creating the institution’s first non-tenure-track faculty union by the end of fall 2018. Elon Faculty Forward went public with their efforts Thursday during their first public meeting, where they announced the filing of their union with National Labor Relations Board.

Labor Union

This is an organized association of workers, often with similar professions, that formed to protet and further their rights as workers.

Tenure and Tenure-Track

Tenure is an indefinite academic appointment that can only be terminated under extraordinary circumstances. It is meant to provide an institution with invested faculty members with increased academic freedom.

Service Employees International Union

SEIU is the organization helping non-tenure-track faculty members at Elon University unionize. SEIU has more than 2 million members in industries such as child care, home care, custodian services, airport support, security and public and private higher education.

Faculty Forward

Faculty Forward is a project of SEIU that focuses on forming unions on campuses around the US. The project has helped certify more than 50 unions on public and private campuses around the country.


National Labor Relations Board

The NLRB is an independent government agency that enforces US labor law in relation to collective bargaining and unfair labor practices. The NLRB is the agency that decides the final bargaining unit and conducts the union vote.

Right-to-Work Law

Under this law, employees in unionized workplaces are banned from negotiating contracts which require all members who benefit from the union contract to contribute to the costs of union representation or be forced to join the union. Twenty-seven states have passed Right-to-Work laws.

Bargaining Unit

In labor relations, this is a group of employees with a clear and identifiable community of interes who under U.S. law are represented by a single labor union in collective bargaining and other dealings with management.

Collective Bargaining

This is the negotiation of wages and other conditions of employment by an organized body of employees. Any collective bargaining agreement reached would affect all employees within the bargaining unit.
